MINISTER’S
LETTER
February 2012
Dear Friends,
A silver wedding anniversary
is always a significant
event which people celebrate
in different ways. Some will
have a party while for
others it may be a special
meal for the couple on their
own. Friends and relatives
will mark the occasion with
special silver gifts; it is
one of those landmarks in
life.
Wesley Road Chapel has
reached this landmark in
2012. Many of our Free
Churches were founded many
years ago so for example it
is not uncommon to be
celebrating a 250th
anniversary. In that sense
Wesley Road is just a
youngster, but in another
sense we can be considered a
mature church in the
ecumenical movement. I was
ordained in 1982 and of the
28 years ministry 13 have
been spent in Baptist
Churches and 15 in
ecumenical churches and that
does not count three years
as student minister in a
Baptist/URC Church. I still
meet people who express
surprise that three
denominations can work
together in such a way, when
for us it has become the
norm. So we should not lose
sight of all that we have to
celebrate in 2012.
In these days of austerity I
have heard people say of the
public services that we used
to offer a silver service,
now we must offer a bronze
service. The reality of
course is that by definition
people in public service
still do their best to offer
a silver service. This year
at church we will look back
with thanksgiving for the
last twenty five years but
we will also look forward to
offering more silver
service. We may do different
things in the future or we
may do fewer things but they
will be silver service. I am
sure we will offer the best
that we can in our worship,
our pastoral care and in the
rich hospitality that the
church has as part of its
tradition.
May God’s blessing be upon
our anniversary year,
Best wishes to you all,

Paul
25th
ANNIVERSARY PREACHERS
During this year when we celebrate 25 years since our building opened
in 1987 we are welcoming
preachers who have been
important in our brief
history.
The first such minister is
Revd Keith Jones who was the
Yorkshire Baptist
Association leader who was
instrumental in the merging
of the Wesley Road Methodist
and the Hall Road Sion
Baptist churches and the
setting up of our Legal
Constitution. For the past
few years Keith has been
Rector of the International
Baptist College in Prague –
a prestigious post.
Keith will be our special
preacher oh Sunday 12th
February. Please be there
to welcome him back and to
get our silver year off to a
splendid start.
